Lives and works in Ghent - Belgium

Arno grew up in Oostham, Limburg. He has considered various secondary schools and in 2019 considered industrial art (product design) at the Hasselt art academy. He then started his fashion training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent, where he completed his diploma and progressed to the sculpture department.

Arno's work consists of a counterworld that opposes the “must” and looks for what “can”. Through the use of strange things that search for new embodiments with an emphasis on the monstrous and the idea of the ugly. This is done through sculpture, transmutative drawings, fashion, poetry and sound inspired by organic and raw mechanical elements, shapes, language and images

He offers an escapist counterworld that resists what “must” and looks for what “can”. This world consists of elements that we find banal or ugly in reality, but which can become interesting or beautiful if they are used artfully, if we dare to approach them differently than taught and thus go against the norms. These come from fashion, animal and nature, space age design, mechanical/industrial elements, cartoon, comics and traditional tattoos that influence formality. They are irregular, rough, armed, incomplete, stunted. However, the 'experience of ugliness' or the experience of what we know as 'not correct' is specific and separate from the experience of beauty. It is not the ugly self that we react to with rejection or disgust. 'Ugliness' is the aesthetic manifestation of that which disrupts and breaks through the 'ordinary' or 'normal' in the world that creates and sustains life: the threat of the monstrous and the contamination by the formless. The detection of which is contained in the 'ugliness experience' is much more complex, less pure and more ambiguous, and conceals much more involvement and a greater importance than the experience of beauty, where the 'interest' comes after disinterestedness and is related to the existential.

An abstraction is created that makes you think you know what you see while you don't know what you are seeing. New embodiments that resist and defend themselves against what must be done. There is a constant interaction between sculpture and fashion, the physical evocation of the sculptures is a process of silhouette design that offers the opportunity to disconnect from the human body so that other shapes, sizes, colors, materials and textures are automatically chosen. During the construction of a sculpture and based on practical aspects, different silhouettes are formed in Arno's head, so that this process continues step by step.

He also seeks interaction with fashion in his transmutative drawings. Where is the line between a print of a painting or drawing? They are drawn on paper canvas after which they are scanned and further processed digitally, printed on different types and sizes of textiles, so that the image is manipulated in terms of sharpness, pixels, color and texture. These originated in silhouettes as prints and his considerable further development into 2D work that he can present as a drawing/painting with elements such as seams that reduce the image and finish. They have a double function because they can once again fulfill the function of prints.

In short, it is a quest of “can” that rejects “must” through the creation and distortion of embodiments that challenges the transmutative function of sculpture and fashion and embraces the idea of the aesthetic and the ugly in its development and existence.
